Biography
About
Scott Petito is a Grammy-nominated bassist, composer, producer, and recording engineer whose career spans five decades and over 1,000 recordings.
Five Decades at the Crossroads of Great Music
Born and raised in Kingston, NY, Scott spent his formative teenage years soaking up the incredible music scene in and around Woodstock from 1974-1978. After studying jazz composition and arranging at Boston's Berklee College of Music, he returned to the Hudson Valley to build a career that would put him at the center of some of the most important recordings in jazz, folk, and rock.
As a bassist, Scott has performed and recorded with an extraordinary roster of artists including The Band, Dave Brubeck, Jack DeJohnette, Keith Richards, Chick Corea, Pete Seeger, and Mercury Rev. He earned a Gold record for Mercury Rev's acclaimed 'Deserter's Songs' and has received three Grammy nominations for his work with Trio Brubeck, Doc Watson, and Pete Seeger.
As a producer and engineer, Scott has recorded more jazz in the Hudson Valley than any other local producer. His client list reads like a who's who of modern music: Michael Franks, Roy Haynes, the Hudson supergroup (Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield, John Medeski, Larry Grenadier), Tony Levin, and hundreds more.
Scott is a 40+ year member of The Fugs, the seminal 1960s political/poetic rock band, and currently serves as bassist and co-producer for The Blues Project. He leads his own group, Modern Times, featuring Omar Hakim, Rachel Z, and other world-class musicians.
Before people walk in the door, I am ready to record. I don't even know what they're bringing in necessarily, and I am ready for them. You never know when you're going to get that take, and it could be while they're taking their coats off, literally.
